^DEFORESTATION^

Picture

Forests are an important part of our Earth. They filter our air and provide us with the oxygen we need to live. They provide a habitat for 70% of the world's land-living animal and plant species, protect against flooding, and filter the water that we drink, and they need our help.

According to the World Resources Institute, over 80% of the world's natural forests have already been destroyed!

Rainforests help generate rainfall, and deforestation has caused droughts in Africa.

Tropical deforestation is responsible for about one fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Water is the most important resource on Earth.  It helps us live, and it helps us grow. But we still won't treat it with the respect it deserves.  Rivers are drying up, glaciers are melting, and we are polluting our lakes and streams more and more every day... Did you know that....

*About 1 in 6 people living in our world, do not have access to potable water.

*Less than 1% of the world's freshwater is actually accessible.

*A person needs 5 to 6 gallons of water a day to survive.

*The average American uses 100 to 176 gallons of water a day... The average African family uses 5.

*The world has lost more than half of its freshwater biodiversity since 1970

*The worlds water demands went up x6 between 1990 and 1995

*A leaky faucet can waste 300 gallons of water a month

Ways That YOU Can Help

Here are some ways that you can help reduce your water usage.

1) Do not have your tap continually on while brushing your teeth, turn it on only to rinse your toothbrush when you are finished.

2) Take quick showers or get a water efficient shower head.

3) Get a head for your hose, that way you can control the amount of water you are using, and don't continually have to turn it on and off in between doing something else. While the hose sprays water as you walk to the tap to turn it off you are wasting an enourmousa amount of water.  Even better yet, get a water efficient head for your hose.

4) Always fill the dishwasher and washing machine to its maximum capacity, that way you will be able to do less loads and save water.

5) Never leave your tap running while you go do something else, CHERISH you're water as its so readily available to you, it may not last.
